If you are interested in applying for a high-ranking character, please check this thread first to see what is available.
Alphas are the leaders of the Pack and tend to be the biggest and baddest dogs around. They are in charge of watching over their packs like the masters once did and defending it against enemies. Anyone who disobeys an Alpha is either out-casted or killed. The attitude of the Alpha determines the attitude of the rest of the Pack.
Betas are the right paw of the Alpha and help enforce pack rules, as well as advise the Alpha, lead patrols and war parties. If the Alpha dies, the Beta will succeed them. Betas are chosen by the Alphas. It is usually favorable for Alphas and Betas to have differing personality traits so things stay balanced.
Seers are dogs who serve their Pack by maintaining peace, using healing herbs and helping with the delivery of puppies. They are usually not the strongest or biggest dogs in the Pack but are thought to have a special spiritual knowledge and an instinctual connection with the masters. Although they do meditate and pray to the Masters, their role within the pack is more like a counselor than a priest.
Seers are often sought by members of the Pack to provide comfort and guidance when a dog is sick, scared or stricken by grief, and will advise the higher ranking dogs as well as relay messages in times of war. (Seers are allowed to have psychic and/or empathetic abilities without buying them). Although Seers may be below Alphas and Betas in rank, they are still highly regarded in a different way, not for their power but for their wit.
It is considered socially unacceptable and evil to harm a Seer, even if Packs are at war with each-other because they are forbidden to harm another dog unless absolutely necessary.
Omegas are the lowest ranking member of the Pack and must eat last, even after the puppies. They are usually physically disabled, small or weak and must learn the art of being perfectly submissive. In spite the way they are treated, Omegas are not hated by the Pack. They are used as a scapegoat for harsh times and bad luck. They are usually charged with tidying up around camp and taking care of puppies so mothers may return to their duties faster.
Proudfoots are dogs which are too old or weak to hunt or fight anymore, but have spent years in service to the Pack. They are respected, fed and well cared for.
Tenderfoots are young dogs which are not puppies, but not yet full grown. The Fighters and Preyfinders take turns helping them learn to hunt, fight and follow all the Pack rules. The Alpha and Beta will routinely test and check their progress to see if they are ready to become full fledged members. When they are grown they must choose whether they will be a Fighter or a Preyfinder. (or perhaps a Seer in training).
Dams are mothers who are nursing puppies. They are considered as honorable and brave as Fighters because of the health risk of pregnancy in these times of pollution, mutation and starvation.
The increasing number of mutants means more mothers die during birth and many pups are stillborns.
Dams usually go straight back to their Fighter or Preyfinder roles when the pups become Tenderfoots, although some females do choose to be Dams full times. Dams have no obligation to share the identity of a pup's father with anyone, and it's not considered strange for them to have multiple mates throughout a lifetime if they choose, although this may cause fights between those who wish to "claim" them.
Pups are exactly what it sounds like, puppies! Cute, fat helpless little fur balls. They're taught the basics of Pack life by their mothers or in some cases, nurses.
Fighters and Preyfinders are normal members of the pack. Preyfinders hunt and gather food for the Pack, and Fighters defend the Pack against predators and other dogs. Fighters are also charged with patrolling the territory for intruders. Sometimes duties overlap or a dog will decide they are more suited to one than the other and switch. They also have the responsibility of teaching Tenderfoots to hunt and fight.
Strays are dogs with no Packs, which either travel alone or in smaller groups. They are always competing with the Packs (and each-other) for food. The Packs tend to regard them as immoral, weak and selfish. It's common for them to be chased off or killed if they are caught on Pack territory and refuse to join.
The Rotstalker Pack has chosen to live in the overgrown and abandoned wasteland of the town of Salem. Although the rotties pay no attention to them, these dogs have had to grow up smelling their horrible stench every waking moment. It is the belief of the Rotstalker pack that living close to where the masters once walked is the true path to salvation, even if it's difficult and dangerous.
Because of the terrible smell, harsh enviroment and scarcer food they tend to be leaner and tougher than forest dogs, as well as have more flashy mutations. They are proud of being tougher and more resourceful. The advantages of living in the town as opposed to the forest is better shelter from the sometimes deadly post-nuclear weather. They also don't have to deal with predators as much. Pack relations are notoriously shaky as dogs are always trying to challenge the Alphas and Betas.
This pack lives in the woods and wet marshes of the nature preserves near Salem. They tend to be good hunters and swimmers. They are generally more docile and healthier than the Rotstalker Pack and believe that turning to nature like their wolven ancestors is the true path to salvation. To them, the city is unclean and full of corruption and the Wild Way is the right way. Because rotties rarely come out of urban areas, these dogs tend to be more inexperienced with them, and are often made sick by the smell and sight.
Despite their fat lifestyle (eating deer and rabbits rather than rats) in comparison to urban dogs, they are terrorized by predators, forest fires and storms. Fawnstalker dogs generally have keener senses of smell as well as better eyesight and hearing.
Their mutations tend to be slightly less dramatic than the Rotstalkers and often help them camouflage with their environment or aid in the hunt.
